Single-Wall, Double-Wall, or Ripple? Choosing the Right Hot Cup

Every hot cup on the market is one of three constructions. Pick right and your customers never think about the cup — pick wrong and they're double-cupping or juggling a sleeve. Here's the counter-level truth on all three.
Single-wall: the workhorse
One layer of PE-lined paper board. It's the lightest, cheapest, and most compact to store — which is why it's the default cup in most cafés. The trade-off is heat: a fresh 85°C pour is uncomfortable to hold for the first few minutes, so single-wall cups usually travel with a sleeve or get double-cupped.
- Best for: drinks served warm rather than scalding, high-volume counters where cost-per-unit rules, anywhere sleeves are already in the workflow.
- Watch out for: hidden sleeve costs. A cheap cup plus a sleeve often costs more than a mid-range insulated cup — and it's two SKUs to stock instead of one.
Double-wall: comfort built in
Two layers of board with an air gap between them. The air does what a sleeve does — insulates the hand — but it's built into the cup, so there's nothing to slip off or run out of. Print looks richer too, because the outer wall stays smooth and never touches the hot liquid.
- Best for: specialty coffee, takeaway-first shops, brands that want a premium feel without accessories.
- Watch out for: storage. Double-wall cups are bulkier per sleeve of 25, so plan shelf space accordingly.
Ripple wall: grip and road-trip armor
A fluted (corrugated) outer layer wrapped around the cup — think of the texture of a cardboard box, rolled into a cylinder. The ridges create air pockets and a grippy texture, making it the most insulated and the hardest to fumble of the three. It reads "roadside diner" in the best way.
- Best for: drive-through and delivery, extra-hot drinks, brands leaning into a tactile, retro feel.
- Watch out for: print detail. The ridges suit bold one- or two-color art; fine photographic print belongs on a smooth double-wall.
The quick decision table
- Cost matters most, sleeves already in use → single-wall
- Premium hand-feel, no accessories → double-wall
- Maximum insulation and grip, bold branding → ripple
Still torn? Order a small sampler of each in your size, fill them with your actual menu, and hand them to three regulars. The cup they don't comment on is the winner.
